If any MYSA-sanctioned tournament has scheduling conflicts with an MYSA-sponsored event, the
MYSA-sponsored event takes precedence. The MYSA-sanctioned tournament will be responsible
for any rescheduling. |
Locating Sanctioned Tournaments
The Tournament Center | Wisconsin 2012 Tournaments
To find a Minnesota tournament, you simply go to: www.thetournamentcenter.com, click on “Find a Tournament,” select “Minnesota” in the drop down box and click on “Search.”
Recently, the Minnesota Youth Soccer Association (MYSA) and nine other states in Region II teamed up to offer its members a better website for posting and advertising sanctioned tournaments. Based on past survey results and unsolicited feedback, MYSA tournament directors and members have been asking for greater exposure for tournaments in Minnesota and easier access to tournaments held in other states; the new website, “The Tournament Center,” does both, plus more. The Tournament Center will list all sanctioned tournaments in Minnesota, as well as those sanctioned in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio North and South Dakota. Currently, Kentucky, Missouri, Ohio South and Wisconsin are not part of this new website, but they may be in the future.
Starting with the 2012-2013 soccer year, Tournament Directors will use this site to notify MYSA of its Intent to Host, for submitting sanctioning documents, submitting payment and more. This will make the sanctioning process easier and quicker for all MYSA clubs hosting tournaments. In addition, your information will be saved from year-to-year so you do not have to start from scratch each time. The Tournament Center website does offer some other features, such as the ability to post additional information about your tournament, travel notification, guest player forms, etc. and MYSA will be working to incorporate some of the other features starting with the 2012-2013 soccer year.
Tournaments are sanctioned as International (may include foreign teams), National (may include USA teams not affiliated with MYSA) or MYSA-Only (include only teams affiliated with MYSA). Some tournaments may be offering two (2) weekends; this is not a mistake in posting! Each weekend will have specific requirements for participation as to age group/gender/division of play. Check the website for each date. If you find errors, the best way to request corrections is by contacting the tournament's director rather than MYSA staff or officers. Coaches should review the advertised tournament dates and reschedule league games that might conflict as soon as league schedules are available. Failure to reschedule league games will result in a forfeit.

Invitational Tournament, Festival and Jamboree Planning for 2012
Your club needs new equipment, wants to offer more scholarships for players, or wants to pay for coaches to obtain new training. The Board of Directors sits down and starts brainstorming, “Where do we get the money? There are all kinds of fundraisers out there, what would work best for our club?” Someone suggests, “Why not go with what we do best, soccer? How about if we host a tournament?” Sound simple, doesn’t it? You already have teams, coaches, fields, everything you need, right? Think again.
Hosting a tournament is not simply an expansion of what you already do as a club. It requires a highly-motivated group of volunteers to run the tournament, along with resources such as helpers to work during the tournament, top-quality fields and knowledgeable referees.
It takes months to lay the groundwork for a successful tournament and both the Board of Directors and the tournament volunteers must be committed to success before the decision is made to host one. Another factor that enters into the decision is the short length of the summer tournament season in Minnesota. In 2011, there were 46 tournaments hosted by MYSA clubs in the time period between the beginning of May and the end of July.
All this being said, there are clubs who do host successful tournaments year after year. How do they do it? Basically, they are committed to giving the teams participating in their event the best possible experience so that they and other teams from their club will want to return the next year. Sometimes, they have to be unconventional and offer some experiences in conjunction with their tournament that will make it unique and stand out from all of the others. Other clubs have started hosting tournaments at non-peak tournament times, such as before the falls season starts.
No more applications will be accepted for tournaments in 2012.

Clubs must be in good standing with MYSA before they will be considered for sanctioning. Also, if you hosted a tournament, festival or jamboree in 2011, ALL of the post-tournament reports must be filed with the MYSA office in a timely manner before you will be considered for 2012. This includes the referee report with the list of referees and the games they officiated. Questions can be directed to Larry Cecchini, MYSA Tournament Director, at mysatd@mnyouthsoccer.org or to Joe Golish at joegolish@mnyouthsoccer.org.
