MYSA is proud of its more than seven-year relationship with Minnesota Sports Medicine (MSM). MSM has provided excellent service to the MYSA soccer community through their outstanding athletic trainers who make sure our youth athletes are safe at all MYSA sponsored events and tournaments. They also provide parents and coaches with sports medicine tips in each issue of the Minnesota Soccer Times as well as opportunities for coaches and parents to receive further training in first aid. Their First Step – soccer specific training video is an excellent tool to safe development of soccer skills.

As of September 1, 2009 MSM will be known as Fairview Sports and Orthopedic Care. They have a new name, but will continue to provide the same great services (listed below) to MYSA and its member clubs and families.

Community Services Available to MYSA Clubs

Coaches, team managers, athletes and parents benefit from services and soccer-specific products offered by Fairview Sports and Orthopedic Care (FSOC), MYSA’s official medical provider. From first aid training to discounted athletic training services, clubs can improve injury care and field play.

Medical Evaluation and Treatment by Sports Medicine Doctors

Description: Athletes injured in practice or game play may see a sports medicine doctor by calling FSOC’s Next-day/Same-day Appointment Line at 612-672-7100.

Discounted Athletic Training Services

Description: Certified athletic trainers have advanced training in treating on field and overuse injuries, and work to return the athlete to play as quickly and as safely as possible. FSOC offers a 25 percent discount to MYSA club members.

FSOC Requirements: Three-month advanced notice.

Sports Medicine Essentials I: First Aid Training

Description of the training: Sports Medicine Essentials I is a two-hour first aid training workshop designed specifically for coaches. FSOC sports medicine doctors and athletic trainers teach on-field first aid training for wide-ranging conditions such as nosebleeds, concussions, fractures and joint dislocations. Hands-on skills training for ankle taping is included. Cost: $75 for MYSA Club Members.

Club requirements and responsibilities: Clubs provide key contact, host site and PowerPoint capabilities, and work with FSOC to coordinate with the presenter.

First Step for Soccer

Description: This injury prevention and strengthening program developed by sports medicine experts helps coaches and team managers to create a custom pre-season and in-season program to improve cutting, pivoting, strength and agility and prevent injury. Training manuals and DVD included. Created by sports medicine experts who are soccer players, including former Minnesota Thunder player, Pierre Morice.

The First Step Program is enthusiastically endorsed by MYSA as a truly valuable contribution to better serving the youth soccer coach and youth soccer player in the prevention of injury and improved performance. It is highly recommended viewing and reading for everyone in MYSA.
